A little soul found herself braving the unthinkable: cancer of the muscle cells. Amare at just 4 years old, underwent 42 weeks of chemotherapy and 6-8 weeks of radiation. At her side providing care, love and hope was Haley Koning, a nurse in Hematology, Oncology and the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit at Children’s Hospital Oakland. Helping Amare win the battle over cancer, Haley decided to fight for her happiness, too.
Amare just wanted to be a kid. And each day, Amare got stronger and stronger, running and playing with other kids. And being a kid also meant having hair just like her sisters.
So Haley took Amare to Perfect Locks to find a hair solution for the resilient little girl simply wanting hair. Upon entering the showroom, Amare’s face lit up as she wanted to touch the hair and try it all on. The friendly staff worked with Amare to find her a perfect full lace wig that would suit her natural look. Seeing a big smile on Amare’s face was uplifting and inspirational for Haley and for everyone at Perfect Locks. In Amare’s words, the wig makes her feel “happy”.
First came light. Then came love.
Amare had no place to go. She was living on Haley’s hospital floor while Haley had always considered adoption. With Haley’s caregiving profession and her husband having gone through cancer treatment himself, they would become the perfect parents for Amare.
At Perfect Locks, we create pieces not just for looks but for the big smiles that radiate from within.
