caring for clip on extensions

With winter coming soon and dry cold weather doing a number on your hair, we figured it’s time to review how to care for your clip-in hair extensions to promote long life and healthy locks and to keep you looking good all winter long. Since clip-in extensions will likely be making many appearances at holiday parties, take some time to review the proper way to keep them beautiful, so they can keep you beautiful too.

Wash Extensions

Extensions can soak up your hair’s natural oil, so it’s important to wash them to maintain their shape and quality. Some of the fibers may fall out if your extensions are allowed to get overly greasy. Wash them gently – soak extensions in warm water in your bathroom sink. Use a gentle, clarifying shampoo. Cover them gently – don’t scrub in the shampoo as you would with your natural hair. Scrubbing it in will just lead to a tangled mess. Rub it down the length of the extension, and rinse thoroughly with cold, clean water. Don’t comb or brush extensions while they’re wet. You’ll risk tearing out the hair. Do not blow dry. Allow them to dry naturally before combing. This is why it’s important not to scrub too hard while shampooing the extensions.

Comb and Moisturize

Once your extensions are dry, you should comb them with a wide-tooth comb to smooth them out and remove any tangles. Just like your natural hair, extensions can grow dry in the colder months, especially when you heat style them, so be sure to moisturize them when they feel dry. A little leave-in conditioner should do the trick. You want to make sure not to over-moisturize, else your extensions will grow oily and flat. Just use a small dab every once-in-a-while.

Styling Your Extensions

Heat styling is necessary if you want to look good, even though it’s damaging to natural hair and extensions alike. Never blow dry extensions, but you can use straightening irons and curling irons to achieve your look. Only heat style hair extensions when they’re completely dry. If possible, purchase two sets of extensions – one that is straightened and one that is curly to cut down on the amount of times you have to style the extensions and increase the life of your extensions. Take good care of your hair extensions, and they’ll keep you looking great.
