Attention all curly haired girls: Do summer weather and your hair go at an absolute battle? Do you just want to chop it off because you can’t tame the beast? Curly hair can be a pain to work within the summer. We run into so many problems and tend to get frustrated because we never know what to do. We either look like a tornado hit us with a frizzy, tangled disaster, or we just wear a bun all day so we don’t have to deal with the mess.
Through trial and error, I narrowed down what hairstyles are best for curls this summer season so you can rock what your momma gave ya! As the curly hair expert, Lorraine Massey, once said, “It’s more than just hair, it’s an attitude”.
Head Scarf
Using a headscarf is one of the cheapest and easiest hairstyles! This method keeps your hair out of your face and your curls looking gorgeous. You can use this method on second or third-day hair (nobody needs to know..shhh). All you have to do is put your hair up in a pineapple with a big hair tie. If you’re wondering what a pineapple is, it’s kind of like putting your hair in one big puffball. Instead of wrapping the hair tie twice or three times, you only wrap it once. If you want more volume in your ‘pineapple’, clip in a few curly hair extensions for that extra oomph. You can use an average sized hair tie if you’d like, but for thicker and longer hair, you can purchase the double sized version from your local Target, Walmart, or drugstore. Then grab any long scarf you have at home, fold it in half, tie it up, and that’s it! If you really want to jazz it up, I suggest using a printed scarf. This will bring all the attention to your beautiful curls and that gorgeous face!
Scarf HeadBand
We’re bringing out the scarf again! If you don’t want to put your hair up, this is a great alternative to the headscarf. For this hairstyle, you are going to use the big hair tie and use it as a headband to push your hair back. When that’s done, find a long scarf, fold it in half, wrap it around the hair tie, and you’re done! This method is perfect for those who are on the go!
Pom Poms
This will bring you back to the days when you were little and your mom would put your hair in pom poms. This is my all-time favorite go-to style when my hair is in full curly mode. Go ahead and grab two hair ties, a rattail comb to split your hair down the middle, and your hands. Split your hair into two sections with the comb, grab the first section, smooth down the crown of the head, and tie it up. Repeat for the second section. Be a little extra and smooth down those baby hairs for an elevated look!
Bantu Knots
Bantu Knots are fun and it spices up your curly hair! (No pun intended!) To better show off your curls, make sure the two Bantu knots are near the front of your scalp. Get a spray bottle filled with water, a gel or serum, a rattail comb, two small elastic hair ties, and some bobby pins! Section off two small parts of your hair in the front, using the comb. Using the spray bottle, wet one of the sections, making it damp. When your hair is damp, use either a gel or a serum to smooth it down, and start twisting the hair. When you can’t twist the hair any further, it will start to form into a little knot. When that happens, grab an elastic hair tie and wrap it around the knot. If your knots need extra coverage, wrap them up using clip-in hair extensions, just a piece or two will do the trick. To better secure, the knot, place one or two bobby pins around it. Now your hair will “Spice Up Your Life!”
One-Sided Curly Faux Hawk
Curly Faux Hawks are not only cute but they make you look bad***! If you are more into the rocker-chic look, this is definitely for you. To achieve this hairstyle, you will need a brush, a gel or a serum, bobby pins, and hairspray. On one side of the hair, brush it back till it smooths out. When that’s done, using a gel or a serum, smooth down the side you brushed out. Once it’s smoothed out, grab some bobby pins and start pinning it back for it to stay in place. To make sure it is fully secure, use some hair spray!
