So you've got your beautiful eyelash extensions installed, and you love them...but they're not quite the right look for your conservative corporate job. Or they've mostly grown out, but there are a few stragglers still hanging on. Or you're experiencing a slightly pinching or pulling feeling. In any case, you need or want to remove your eyelash extensions. Here's how!
Wait, if Possible
First and foremost, try to avoid removing eyelash extensions prematurely if you can help it, and especially try not to have to do it yourself at home. This is because eyelash extensions are bonded to your natural lashes using surgical-grade adhesive - it's designed to withstand water, soap, and sweat, and will not come off easily. Reputable technicians should be able to remove your extensions for you free of charge, so try to go back to your cosmetologist for the job if you can.
However, sometimes the person who installed your eyelash extensions did not do a good job. This is the case if you experience painful clumping or intertwining of the lash extensions. In this case, find another licensed professional to remove the eyelash extensions and undo the damage. They may charge a nominal fee, but it's better than suffering and possibly injuring your eyes.
But if returning to a technician isn't an option, you can also loosen your eyelash extensions at home. You won't need any harsh solvents or removers, either, and the process is relatively easy.
This process is recommended for those who have semi-permanent eyelash extensions, or ones that have been bonded to the lash with a somewhat weaker glue. It can also work for straggling or near-mature lash extensions that are nearing or at the end of their life cycle. For recently-installed lashes that need to come out, always see a licensed professional.
Step by Step Instructions
Otherwise, here's what to do:
- Wash your face as usual, making sure not to scrub at the eye area.
- Fill a mixing bowl with steaming-hot water, place your face over it, and drape a large towel over your head. Remain this way for 10 to 15 minutes. This steam treatment will help loosen the bonds of the eyelash extension glue.
- Dip a cotton ball, cosmetic pad, or makeup sponge in olive oil and gently swipe your upper and lower lash lines, making sure not to get any of the oil in your eyes. This will give the extensions "slip" and help them slide right off your eye.
You should see the false lashes come off on the sponge or cotton ball, or notice them falling onto your counter top. If not, get a professional to assist you with removing your lash extensions.
